Hello Guns to Gardens KC Community!

It’s been a minute, but we’re excited to be back with a lot of new updates and information. For starters, Guns to Gardens Kansas City is now officially its own non-profit organization! Along with that, we now have this dedicated newsletter, our own bank account, website, and an executive team helping guide this work forward. That team includes the Rev. Jenny Wells, Earl Spurgeon, Shannon Winfrey, Jess Popescu, and the Rev. Phil Woodson.

Our next Safe Anonymous Firearms Disposal Event will take place on May 2,
at Stilwell United Methodist Church

Volunteer training and participation will all take place on the same day, making it easy to step in and be part of the event. We are looking for 10–15 additional volunteers from our broader network to help supplement the host site team. Space is limited based on roles and safety needs, but we also need everyone’s help in sharing and promoting this event so more people are aware of this safe and anonymous disposal option.

Expanding Through Pop-Up Events

The Stilwell UMC event is the first of what we hope will be many pop-up events across the Kansas City area. We are already working on plans for two additional events later this year that will follow this same model, partnering with host sites and inviting volunteers from across the network to participate.

Ongoing Support Needed

As this work grows, so do the practical needs that come with it. For the past two years, we’ve been able to rely on volunteers for a lot of tools and supplies, but as we expand, more of that needs to be provided by us. That includes things like safety gear, dismantling tools, replacement materials, and the basic costs of keeping things running like communication, publicity, and the website.
