The Basics of Hosting

A Safe & Anonymous Disposal Event can be hosted by a local church, community group, or other organization with access to a building and parking lot. While churches are often ideal hosts because they can provide space for training, restrooms, and gathering, this opportunity is not limited to congregations. Other groups and organizations with similar facilities are also well suited to host an event.

Hosting an event requires a commitment to provide a parking lot for the firearm turn-in, access to a building with electricity and restrooms, some financial support to help cover event costs, and approximately 20 volunteers. On the day of the event, Guns to Gardens KC provides on-site training for all volunteers, ensuring that each person understands their role and the safety protocols involved before the event begins. All volunteers are required to participate in this same-day training and are asked to be available for the full day, typically from 8:00am to 5:00pm, to support setup, training, the event itself, and breakdown.

A Guns to Gardens KC event is a short-term, community safety initiative designed to provide a safe and anonymous way for individuals to surrender unwanted firearms. The primary event takes place in a parking lot over a defined window of time, usually around two hours, and is staffed by trained Guns to Gardens KC team members who are trained and experienced in firearm handling and dismantling.

Participants bringing firearms for disposal are instructed in advance to arrive with firearms unloaded and secured in the trunk or back seat of their vehicle. Upon arrival, they remain in their vehicle while designated and trained members of the firearms safety team approach, confirm the weapon is unloaded, and remove it safely. Firearms are never brought into any building and remain outdoors for the duration of the event.

All handling and dismantling of firearms is conducted by individuals who have received specific safety training from a Guns to Gardens KC Firearm Safety Officer (who is present for the entire event). Firearms are rendered permanently inoperable on-site using hand tools and equipment that meet federal ATF guidelines for destruction, ensuring they cannot be restored to working condition. Ammunition, if surrendered, is handled and disposed of according to established safety protocols.

The event is structured with clearly defined volunteer roles, including greeters who direct traffic and provide instructions, safety team members who handle and dismantle firearms, and administrative volunteers who manage check-in, distribute pre-funded gift cards if offered, and coordinate logistics. A safety perimeter is maintained around the dismantling area, and only authorized personnel are permitted within that space. First aid resources are available on site, with certified First-Aid responders present. Guns to Gardens also provides a trained security guard for the duration of the event to monitor the area, support crowd control, and help ensure that all safety protocols are consistently followed.

The host organization provides the location, coordinates volunteers, and works alongside Guns to Gardens to ensure the event runs safely and smoothly. This is not a firearm buyback or resale program. No firearms are redistributed. All surrendered weapons are permanently destroyed, and their materials are later repurposed into garden tools or art.

These events are one-day, time-limited efforts focused on community safety and harm reduction. With clear procedures, trained leadership, and defined roles, they are designed to minimize risk while offering a practical and meaningful way for communities to participate in reducing gun violence.

If your organization has space, volunteers, and a desire to serve your community in this way,
we’d welcome the conversation.
