The shape is simple, but the material carries the story. What was once part of a firearm has been cut apart and reassembled into the shape of a cross.

The wooden pieces rise around the center in layers, with firearm parts attached throughout the piece. From one side, the base reads “Reap.” From the other side, it reads “Sow.” Together, those words name the question at the heart of the artwork: what are we planting, and what will grow from it? From the side, the piece has the shape of something rising or growing. From the top down, the wooden pieces form the petals of a flower.

The parts are arranged on a cross-shaped frame to evoke a broken body crucified. It is meant to hold together the harm done by firearms to real bodies, families, and communities, and the Christian image of Christ’s own body broken by violence.

The words, “nor will they train for war,” (from Isaiah 2:4) point to the hope behind Guns to Gardens Kansas City: that tools of harm can be dismantled, reshaped, and used to help us imagine something more peaceful.
